Currently Reading.

1. A little bookshop in Paris called Shakespeare & Co.

2. Radishes with salt & butter, and chocolate rum balls (yum.)

3. Legends.

4. A classic & the Spanish war

5. A twisted and monumentally demented world.

Don't know why I keep buying books when there are piles of un-read material sitting on the floor bed and cupboard and shelves. It's like an addiction to bookfairs and the odd-two-quid-for-a 400-page-paperback-deal.

So I was the kid who stayed at home to read while everyone was out having fun.

Whatever. It was fun to me :)

The coming of age

I used to detest hearing people go on about work all the time, but now I totally understand. It's so bizarre feeling 'old'. Work, rockafella practices, meetings, family, church commitments and worst of all, A-level results just around the corner... It's going to be a tough couple of days. Yet, every week I ask God to help me pull through and I do. Sometimes all you have to do is laugh in the face of life and it'll all be better :)

Found a collection of 'World's Worst Metaphors' and it certainly got me laughing. For definitions sake, metaphors are used to put connotative meanings to phrases and not to state the obvious, the literal, and the hopelessly stupid. Here are the top picks...

Her face was a perfect oval, like a circle that had its two other sides gently compressed by a Thigh Master.

Her eyes were like two brown circles with big black dots in the centre.

John and Mary had never met. They were like two hummingbirds who had also never met.

The young fighter had a hungry look, the kind you get from not eating for while.

She grew on him like she was a colony of E. coli and he was room-temperature British beef.

How I would love to use all of these gems is a single essay.

And now we're alone and now we're alive

The genius that is Alison Sudol. This is beauty, and poetry.

So come on come out, wherever you are :)

An Adorable Boy

Hi my name is Elijah. I am trimega annoying and noisy, but also extremely cute. Cheers.

To travel to Paris, to wear perfume, and to listen to jazz

'It's not enough to educate us anymore, Mrs Walters!
You've got to tell us why you're doing it!'

It appears that I got my Carey Mulligan filmography thoroughly mixed up: I watched Wall Street first, followed by the poignant film Never Let Me Go, where she fitted perfectly into the role of a displaced Cathy Glass and lastly, An Education. It turned out to be for the better; her first major role as the bright but sheltered 16-year-old schoolgirl swept away by a suave gentleman was one of the best I'd ever seen.

Captured in the sleepy and old-fashioned English suburb of Twickenham, the film explores the true importance of an academic education as compared to, as Peter Sarsgaard so charmingly puts it, an education in the 'University of Life'. Mulligan's rather anachronistic character of Jenny puts the thoughts of thousands of A-level students together on the screen flawlessly, and more importantly exposes the restrictive societal mindset held by the working-class in 1960s England.

However, what was most impressive was the way the movie ended. While some may find it extremely unsatisfying (and ultimately, a betrayal in morals to the first ninety percent of the film), I found that the ending expressed finding comfort and a satisfaction for the simpler things instead of settling for living in a fantasy. Ambition is all well and good, but in the end, you can never truly have a shortcut in life.

Gosh it feels like I'm writing a literature essay here. So trust me, it's a movie you can't miss. Although no one could ever replace Ms. Hepburn, I'm personally really glad that Carey Mulligan was casted as Eliza Doolittle in the My Fair Lady remake. Definitely something to look forward to!

flash flash flash! photography

Five photography accessories to die for. Why do you make me broke, photojojo?

1. The Don Draper Leather Camera Satchel. For those who watch mad men, you'll see how amazingly suited this bag is for a certain Mr. Hamm.

2. For toy-camera suckers, a must-have. The 360degrees Spinner Panoramic

3. Always a fan :)

4. Works with any toy camera with a hotshoe! Holga, Dianas, BBFs, Lomo cams... etc.

5. I don't have a DSLR, but these beautifully-coloured straps are good enough reasons to have one! Love the sky blue and red!

Flying off to Perth tomorrow with Oops! Asia. Looking forward to getting some decent photography in whilst whizzing around doing goodness knows what. For now, au revoir!

Once upon a toadstool

Today at our Chinese New Year steamboat gathering at Ms. Teo's (the last of the new year visiting, God knows I've done more than my fair share of them), I was by far, the person who consumed the most mushrooms. What's wrong with that, I'd like to ask! Porcini, button, shitake, portobello, cremini, truffle... you can't go wrong with them. Especially with this recipe.

All you'll need is a good rack of spices, some stale bread and any of the above fungi. It's that simple. Who needs to call for a macdonalds breakfast when you've got mushrooms on toast? ;)

From weed, to rock & roll, to cameras

People just don't enjoy concerts like they used to... I'm guilty for the rabid recording of gig material as well :/

Can't wait for laneway pictures to be up! It was mind-blowingly wicked. Finally, a decent indie festival! So glad to have been part of it.
