Glorious Ruins.

It's been a while & I reckon it's time for a regular, good old-fashioned update on what's been happening... I've always been a big list-maker, so here's how life has been in the past couple of weeks in five parts:

1. Old friends, food, drink & live music.

Five more weeks till Sweden & I'm treasuring every moment I have with the people here before I leave. Lunches at Marche & dinners at Saveur, watching the Goodfellas at Timbre with Tiara & Kieran whilst getting drowsy from the multiple LIITs & of course, the inevitable late-night suppers. Have also been spending a lot of time at the movies (Great Expectations, Now You See Me, World War Z & hell, even that monsters university animation), which is great except that I keep falling asleep halfway. It's been lovely, nonetheless.

2. Church Camp 2013: Serpong, Indonesia.

Wow. I can honestly say that this has been the best church camp I have ever gone for in the sixteen (yes, sixteen!) years of being an NLCCian. This year we had a combined camp with one of our sister churches in Serpong, a small township outside Jakarta. Church camp is always refreshing & something I look forward to every two years but there was just something special about this years' camp, a combination of certain events & the relationships built with people that made it different & perhaps even ground-breaking.

The highlights:

Churros from a shop called Churreria. We went after these deep-fried treats & their range of chocolate dips like rabid dogs, rushing to the mega mall (right next to our hotel) every night after service to get some. In all honesty, they weren't that fantastic, but somehow sharing these warm, sugary snacks with a bunch of people whose company you genuinely enjoy made them taste so much better.

We also patronized a very hipster cafe called d'journal (or 'DJ ournal' by most of us, coined by Schist) that served pretty good cafe lattes & an assortment of teas every single day. Great hangout spot & plus, they didn't kick us out till 2am.

Had the privilege to be a part of the craziest team in church camp, proudly named 'LIGHTLY SALTED', an eclectic mix of odds & ends: teenagers, little kids & a bunch of parents. It's amazing how we managed to do the wacky night item & the cheer, thanks to our leaders (Alex & Bea) & frankly, because of how creative the parents were. Always ended up in stitches at the end of each rehearsal & enjoyed every moment together. What an awesome bunch of people!

This was the other youth team lead by Pat & Megan (my cool roomie since 2012 lol) that was so amazing, both in their cheer & name & wacky night item. Pity we didn't get to spend much time together though.

Another amazing part of church camp was the worship. I remember just feeling so overwhelmed & partially frustrated before camp at the thought of doing/leading worship for four services, worrying about practice times & music sheets & the biggest headache of all, setlists. Oh, dreaded setlists. It didn't help that my throat felt as raw as sandpaper &that I could barely string a sentence together without a hacking cough. Really could not see how church camp could be enjoyable with so much to do, but God really came through in a time of desperation & weariness & did something so powerful through us in the praise & worship sessions. It seems surreal to talk about it now, about how everything just came together & about how people abandoned themselves fully to worship despite the crackling sound system & power failures. & this was regardless of whether it was a full band or just a guitar & two voices leading. It just showed me how much God could move when we fully relied on Him! I'm beginning to understand what people mean when they say that excellence in worship comes not solely from our skills but from the trust that each musician had in each other, & the trust that a worship leader has on his or her team & vice versa. I just have to say that I'm part of an amazing, amazing team.

It's a crazy rant, I know! It was just cool to see the church, particularly our youth group, be so deep in worship night after night. Not caring about what another person was doing, not caring about how he or she looked like to another. It was as if a dam had broken, as if a wall had come down. What a privilege it was, to be a part of it all.

Besides worship & all the team stuff, we didn't do much else except hang out at DJ-ournal or each others' rooms, talking late into the night. The last night, after megs & I invited a bunch of meandering youth to our room, word unexpectedly got around that everyone was gathering at 1106 & by 1am, there were about twenty people squished in our tiny hotel room. It was a little insane, how we managed to order room service & play bridge & the classic 'animal' game despite how exhausted everyone was... Great great fun though.

Though it was mad tiring with all the music rehearsals & team rehearsals & planning for a birthday surprise (Happy birthday Anthea & Beatrice! Love you both.) while also attempting to squeeze in time with my family, I had a real blast. Church camp has just barely passed but I'm already eager for youth camp 2014 & what new things it'll bring!

3. Work.

After deliberating on work opportunities for a while, I ended up helping out at Oops Asia again this summer. It's always a privilege & joy to go back because everyone feels like family & we always have a good time together, whether if it's at a ministry event or jamming spontaneously in the studio or just laughing over something during lunch.
Particularly excited for our new media videos that we're currently experimenting with & shooting. I love little artsy ventures like these where it allows our team to get creative & create something uniquely 'ours'.

(P.S. what I wore to work sometime last week. Love the chill office vibe, something I often take for granted!)

4. Rest.

There isn't much time for this at all, but when there's an hour or so to spare, I love delving deep into old comforts: poetry, song-writing or best of all, afternoon naps. Can't wait for the couple of weeks just before I leave where I can have tons more of this!

Also, having tea in my lovely, new, firetruck-red tea set! Back story: Last tuesday after a gruelling day of work & before young adults lifenet, I met Andry alone for a quick talk at the coffeeshop because he said he had something 'urgent' to discuss with me. After the talk (which had made me slightly anxious the preceding days but turned out to be about nothing much at all), we walked over to church in time for lifenet to start. But when andry opened the door to the main sanctuary, I got a whole lot of poppers & noise & a rousing 'SURPRISE' thrown at me by a combination of youth & young adults...! What a crazy surprise. Turns out that lifenet was but a farce & that Jenn & Jordan etc had been planning a surprise 21st birthday party for me for a while. The rationale was that I would be in Sweden during my actual birthday & they couldn't celebrate it with me, but it was still totally absurd because my birthday wasn't for another six months. Still, it was really, really sweet (until Circle of Death happened... HAHA). I received a tea set & a double set of TWG teas from everyone, which shows how well they know me ;) I can't believe how fortunate I am to have such thoughtful & amazing friends, & I'm grateful for them everyday.

So thank you all, it was incredible.

5. Sunsets & stuff

Photos taken during our nature trip to chek jawa last Friday, which I had to wake up at 550am for. I surprised myself & a lot of other people simply by getting up at all & staggering out of the house. Interesting trip & good fellowship & took some nice photos, but it's going to take much more than this the next time I wake up before dawn.

That's about it for now. It's currently 6am & I've spent the past two & a half hours just putting this together... somehow, it just felt important to do so. I could go on, but it would be mad to continue & so ends the longest post ever.

Will write again soon, but for now, good night!

Within & WIthout

“In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars.”
The Great Gatsby
F. Scott Fitzgerald

__________________________________________________________________

I recently caught up with a dear friend C, who is currently studying journalism & English literature in the dreamy city of Paris. We talked like how old friends often do: naturally & unabashedly & sometimes absent-mindedly & so it was shocking when she suddenly stopped in her tracks & scolded me for the way I blogged. C, one of the few loyal readers left of this forgotten online space, told me to blog about something concrete, & not to be so vague & nebulous (a word we are fond of throwing around lately) as I 'always' am. It was puzzling to me at first, but it's true. Many writers do feel an obligation to always write about a compelling issue, to publish a review on an art film or an electronic product, or to update his/her readers on a life-changing moment, but the thing is that life isn't always about great, big stories like that. Life isn't just made up of momentous events; it's made up of a million minuscule occurrences too.

So here are a few 'concrete' things that have been happening in mine lately. For starters, the entire office spent an entire Saturday celebrating Alarice's & Calvin's wedding union two weekends ago. What can I say? The chapel was resplendent, the ceremony was lovely & the dinner after was intimate & special. It was a wonderful way to spend an evening, getting drowsy with beer & sleep with friends under fairy lights & flags. I couldn't be happier for Rice, who's been like an older sister to me the past couple of years, at my workplace & elsewhere. The journey is only beginning & I'm so stoked to see how God uses this amazing couple in his kingdom :)

Have been meeting up with the girls (& a couple of dudes) from church often too, for meals or movies or just pure conversation. It started out with a strict sense of urgency, where the ending of sophomore year made me realise how quickly I would be leaving this country for exchange in Sweden & well, I really did want to meet everyone at least once before that. This quickly changed though, with teas turning into dinners & shopping trips turning into 4 hour-long talks at the nearest coffeehouse. I love spending time with these friends & mentors & younger youth. These are the people I've taken for granted for more than 15 years but I am certainly grateful for every one of them.

There are so many more things to write about. Books I've been reading & music I've been listening to. Art exhibitions & time spent with S. The Great Gatsby film. Secret tea sessions & bizarre socials. Work & my hilarious colleagues. I love writing at this time of the night, where the air is still & the world stops, if only for this twilight hour. It's as if God reserved this time, or created midnight at all to let people think & write. But for now the hour is late & that will all have to wait till next time.

P.S. I hope this is concrete enough for you, C. Love.

Big hearts, big hearts are for breaking

Love's too easy
so we make it into a game.

Fling your affections out
of the window now,
sell your heart on street corners,
You know what they say.
Big hearts,
yes your big heart
is for breaking.

i should really have joined the circus.

Let's see. No talent in studying, nada attention span and who am i kidding about how awesome i am in math? Besides, you get free bicycle rides in circuses. Lest free rides balancing a plate on a stick on your teeth.

Ramble!

TIS' THE NEW MONTH! (here's some old news.)

1. Obviously ya'll know about the MOE not extending school holidays. After all the hype with the eastsiders at starbucks the other day, was gobsmacked upon hearing the news on telly. HELLO, is the 200+ new cases not big enough a clue that something else must be done besides temperature taking?

2. Was literally dying the day before literature papers, and went to claud's place in desperate need of good music and rest. What can i say? 'I get by with a little help from my friends' - The Beatles. Thanks Clauds!

3. Unfortunately, that was also the day wherein Tiara texted to tell me that Michael Jackson had passed. He was one of those guys who everyone thought would live forever (and of all the things to die off.) So in tribute to the greatest pop icon who ever lived (in this generation, as least), my family and I spent two hours watching old music videos and docummentaries of him. Which resulted in my addiction to songs like 'Smooth criminal' and 'The way you make me feel'.

R.I.P MJ!

4. Toiling in my own jealousy (brownie points for those who get W.I.L reference!) the whole of last weekend cause Sarah G. got to go all the way London to catch the Kooks and Kings of Leon live in Hyde Park. The taunting text DID NOT help

5. Our social in Botanic Gardens (last last week?!) playing frisbee and captain's ball. Needless to say, the girls sat at the sidelines and the boys played. And the girls who did play (the cool ones like faith and i) never got the frisbee/ball. Le sigh. It always ends like this!

6. Watched the Green Mile. EPIC MOVIE. John Coffey is tres adorable. and so is mr. Jingles!

7. Went to a flea market with Jen-fer (TWAAAAT) on saturday after the literature paper, going to P.S. with no idea where it was. Two people with bad sense of direction should not trust another person's words about non-existant shuttle buses. Anyhoos, after half-an-hour of trampling around Old School, discovered the place.

It was like. bleh. Alot of the stores were mass-ordered/produced from HK or Taiwan or goodness knows where. The whole warehouse (effing hot and mind you, i was in uniform) resembled a compact version of Bugis Street.

Tell me, what happened to the Elvis Costello and Goo Goo Dolls records? Beat-up Taylor Acoustics and penny-bracelets? Gone. The orange and black vespas outside were the only interesting things :D

Met Clare and a bunch of old Sacians. Clare was relegated to maid of the day and was commanded to buy food for the rest of the store-owners, so we three HIKED down Mt. Sophia where aunt carol picked us up for music practise.

A day of short-fueled-tempers and not-so-surprising-birthday-cakes.

8. Lunch at 'A pinch of salt'!

'Frankly, i prefer pepper.' - Alexis

The food sucked. Fun company. Beatrice had beat-rice (risotto). NO ONE HEARD MY HILARIOUS JOKE.

Need a good picture with bex soon! She's leaving tomorrow (phhhooo you. and the day before my exams, they have dinner together. what is this?!)

9. MATH PAPER = joke + utter depression.

Laugh or cry? You decide

10. We are going to Genting! We are going to start basking!

Luki came up with all the weird ideas of where to go at the end of the year and we downgraded from japan to genting (FOR NOW.) Being mature and independent youths, the idea is to get the moolah needed from the one thing we actually like to do: music!

I am looking forward to it :D The electric prunes/Key-of-H/Homeschooled makes our debut!

It is late and i need to wake up early to cram linguistics tomorrow. Goodnight all!

Makeout Kids never had the chance to be best friends.

Paper princes,
Adorned in gold and silver.
It seems the stars glimmer,
but only for you.

They all have a tale to tell,
all of them.
Written on notepads and paper napkins,
how they sit at roadsides and muse,
Beauty found,
at coffee house corners.

They're all the same.
Take off your colours,
all of them.
And then we'll fly,
my paper prince.

What's new?
Nothing really.

So we had the average school week. Teachers being annoying and scolding me all the time; check. Plenty of failed tests; check. Sixteen-hour days, falling asleep during classes, collapsing under the piles of homework: check check check!

The only saving grace is my aussome class. You guys are the shizzle.
This was taken on. Hmmmm. Monday?

Fooling around behind ahhhem.

Kenny looks like an ex-convict, i swear. Attempt of looking like avatar: FAIL!

The unsuspecting tiara!
ICE QUEEN! do not be fooled. Her glacial stare is fatal.

the unsuspecting tiara. AGAIN.

Amethyst! Brotherhood!
Lit girls + 2 extras.

totally blocking jac's face but whatever!

Nick Glascow: Nooooooooo.
Suan Hin: Duhhh.

Tuesday pictures.
I swear simlin has too much energy in the morning. Cannot stand it when she starts to camwhore with my camera!

And having this ridiculous traditional games thingy during our SD class. How SAC can CJC get?!?! Tiara was showing off some wicked five-stones moves and Leon was acting cool AS USUAL but total fail!

We were playing tennis with our math notes and a single five-stone. haha!

Zhi Yoong's Mind: I was forced to take this photo with this weird girl.

AND BRACCCE YOURSELVES!

laugh your heart out. and throw it into the DUSTBIN.

Mdm wee, my arch nemisis.
Was a pathetic sick crap on wednesday, stayed home all day and did nothing. Except sleep for sixteen-hours straight and watch american idol like a faithful fan. Kris, adam, allison and danny were awesome as usual!

There is a bug passing around class, i swear. Amy was sick on thursday AND friday, so during economics class, i was wandering around like a lone soul while everyone was at lecture. Stupid girl. Get well soon, ODAC-er.

Friday was the best. Woke up in the morning, so stoked about going for 17 again with my ice-y dice-y people! I did Nick T a favour and high lighted his CSE booklet cause i had an economics break. Ms Mook is scary. She's like mood-swing-queen, and we are the tiny trembling footnotes during CSE class.

Was so bored during history that i walked through the 'exit' door whilst entering the library, just to piss Hagrid(our resident librarian, who resides in a place called FrownTown) off. I think she bust her vein with all the excitement.

After school we celebrated Kenneth's birthday with an ultra girly cake!

wickedd stuff.

George was being an annoying prick and smearing cake on Suat Ning (hereafter known as Virginia, as i have dubbed her so.) Hmmm is this counted as romantic? how very queer :D Happy birthday Kenneth! You old man.

Anyway the two twin weirdos wanted to go to Mcdonalds for the 4.50 value meal, cheap craps that they are. And they led us through this horrible jungle like path for what seemed like years. Virginia and i were like dying cause of the heat, ice cubes that we are. Kai a.k.a ice queen just shunned us all the way as usual cause we complained too much.

first day of school for suat ning!

You guys are bloody hilarious.
Finally made it to united square. which was quite a pretty place with lotsa stuff to eat. Macs was crowded, because of the value meal thing! Sheessh.

Had a hilarious lunch where i christened Leon 'Dino'. cause he looks like one.
Plus with no hair on the side of his head, he even looks more so like a T-rex. Rawwr.

Suat ning was being insulted all the way and she couldnt stand up for herself! Sheesh. She should go for sarcasm 101. Kai went off for some Interact CCA shite, so we milled around.

And kenneth spotted this and said: Hey look! Its leon!
lol.

Look at kenny spazzing with laughter and Leon trying to be cute. eek. cannot stand his pink specs, thanks.

Suat ning is so short hahah!

Toys r us is the love. No matter how old you are.
Ken was a nice lad and brought me and Virginia to the MRT station before going home!

Went to get tickets for 17 again! IT WAS WELL-WICKED. We called Kai like a gazillion times and she still couldnt make it. Merde.

ZAC EFRON. is the sex.
Me and Virginia were screaming during the whole movie. poor people in front, whoever you are.

Zhi Yoong and Kai met up and we ate pasta mania for dinner and we talked about Efron and Kai rolled her eyes and said he was ugly. I predicted all our futures. ZY is going to be a houseHusband! It was the most hilarious and i believe the most accurate. There is no shame in being a future house husband ZY! We'll meet in thirty years at Taka, which will be owned by the TaiTai Suat Ning and run by the genius Kai! :D

anyway friday was fun.

today i was supposed to study, but we played basketball near parkway for a couple of hours. Jennifer was moaning and groaning about the heat when she was actually basking in the shade and reading her book, which she didnt let me touch cause my hands were sticky from sweating. She's a prude! Srsly. Lunch at ajisen and it was Mark's and Ellie's baptism at east coast :D was almost pushed into the sea by mel and jen, those two wisecracks!

Cabbed back with melanie and did some complaining in the car... Sleepover at Bex's tonight! Its no wonder i never get any work done. Four-hour hiking after church tomorrow which i'm not looking forward to at all.

BE. OPTIMISTIC.
two months from now imma be on the top of Mount KK and cursing myself and celebrating my achievement.

See you guys in a bit.

P.S. i forgot about something. Last week Mel and I were at TM and she happened to be wearing the original TWLOHA's Love Is The Movement shirt. So we decided to kick up a fuss at that branch. Just for kicks.

Entered the shop.

Melanie: OH. MY. GOD. look at this?! *turns around a few times for the dramatic effect.
Me: What's this?!

So at the point when i snapped the shot, this shop assistant guy with pretty bad english and a strong chinese accent came over and we had the following conversation.

Dude: Eh excuse me, you not allowed to take photo in the shop.
Melanie: Excuse me! Why did you guys print the fake imitation ones?
Dude: Huh?
Me: Why did the giordano branch copy the original design from To Write Love On Her Arms (*points to mel's shirt indignantly) and put your name on it?
Dude: Mam, all our designs are 100% original. Our designers in hong kong design them (duh.) and its copyrighted.
Melanie: No you didn't. TWLOHA patented this design years ago and i bought this online. For thirty dollars. (the shirts were going for a tenner.)
Dude: Um, no no. These is original.
Me: This isn't even funny okay.

so on and so forth. Freaked out the guy and stormed out furiously. Laughed like crazy for a while. Thus ends the story.

Serves you guys right.
